I had the pleasure of working with Chase as he planned this secret photo op. We had gone to the beach the night before to take a look at potential locations in Carlsbad. I had been to this spot before when Rob played with his off camera flash and knew that the amount of people at this spot dwindled down as the sun set.

So many people stopped by to take a look at the heart Chase had drawn in the sand and everyone that stopped was impressed. After the heart was drawn, Chase took off to his house to pick up Melissa for a “stroll on the beach.” I had been shooting for a little while getting my settings and right before they arrived, a cloud drifted in front of the sun which was perfect timing to diffuse some of the light for a while. When they arrived at the spot, Melissa seemed genuinely surprised even though she said she had an idea what was coming. I think the surprise worked. The hard part for Chase was getting the ring hidden while they were getting out of the car. He ended up using his camera case. We ended up staying a while and taking photos and chatting while the sun was setting.

It was a fun night and Chase was such a cool guy to work with. He’s really mellow and just went with the flow of the evening.
